Denise Miller Nominated for Kalamazoo Public Library Board of Trustees Vacancy

The Ad Hoc Trustee Vacancy Sub-Committee of the Kalamazoo Public Library Board of Trustees met in a public session this evening to discuss applicants for the vacant Trustee seat.  Chair Chris Kindy invited the two other sub-committee members (Anna Moss and Jennifer Moore) to discuss how they scored the applications and who their top candidates were.  The candidates were assigned numbers and discussed anonymously.  Candidates 1, 3, and 7 all received top scores from at least two of the sub-committee members.

Once they had three finalists, the sub-committee members discussed each of them individually.  Ultimately, there was a clear consensus that they all felt "candidate 3" was the most qualified, in part because of that candidate's DEI experience and the fact that the library is currently seeking a DEI officer.  The short term of the appointment, 5 months, also factored into the decision to act quickly and not to proceed to a second meeting, where finalists would be interviewed.

After they agreed to nominate "candidate 3" to the full board, there was a brief discussion about whether or not to publicly reveal the identity of the nominee.  In part because the meeting was available to view live on-line, they decided to reveal that Denise Miller was their nominee.  The next scheduled meeting of the Kalamazoo Public Library Board of Trustees is at 4 p.m. on Monday, July 25.  It's expected that the full board will consider and vote on Denise's nomination at that meeting.  They might also swear them in at that meeting.  Board President Jannie Williams was among those in the audience.
