Kalamazoo Public Library Begins National Search for New Director

The Kalamazoo Public Library Board of Trustees met in special session yesterday evening to consider search options for replacing outgoing director Ryan Wieber .  No information was revealed during the meeting about the Lansing-native 's future plans.  Outgoing trustee Christy Roth was the only absent member of the 7-person board.  When the trustees arrived, they found complementary KPL 150th Anniversary tote bags and t-shirts on their chairs.  Board candidate Jeff Messer attended the meeting in-person, while candidate Kara Trainor attended virtually. Board President Jannie Williams first asked the trustees whether or not an ad hoc search sub-committee should be formed.  Trustee Lisa Godfrey said there would not be much benefit in forming a 3-person sub-committee, as all executive search meetings are subject to the Michigan Open Meetings Act.  She suggested a search committee comprised of the entire board.  This would be particularly beneficial, given the upcoming winter holiday

Denise Miller Nominated for Kalamazoo Public Library Board of Trustees Vacancy

The Ad Hoc Trustee Vacancy Sub-Committee of the Kalamazoo Public Library Board of Trustees met in a public session this evening to discuss applicants for the vacant Trustee seat .  Chair Chris Kindy invited the two other sub-committee members (Anna Moss and Jennifer Moore) to discuss how they scored the applications and who their top candidates were.  The candidates were assigned numbers and discussed anonymously.  Candidates 1, 3, and 7 all received top scores from at least two of the sub-committee members. Once they had three finalists, the sub-committee members discussed each of them individually.  Ultimately, there was a clear consensus that they all felt "candidate 3" was the most qualified, in part because of that candidate's DEI experience and the fact that the library is currently seeking a DEI officer .  The short term of the appointment, 5 months, also factored into the decision to act quickly and not to proceed to a second meeting, where finalists would be in

Kalamazoo City Commission Delays Return to In-Person Meetings Again, for the Last Time

During last night's regular, 100% virtual, business meeting, the Kalamazoo City Commission delayed an expected repeal of the local emergency declaration that has been in place since March 15, 2021.  They now plan to repeal it at their next regular, 100% virtual, business meeting on Monday, December 20.  This means they won't resume in-person meetings until Monday, January 3, 2022.  The repeal of the local emergency declaration is irrelevant at this point, because Michigan law doesn't permit them to continue meeting 100% virtually or hybrid beyond December 31, 2021 .  By the time they meet on January 3, it will have been 658 days since they held a public meeting in person.
